Kaws made waves with his largest sculpture to date: a 92-foot inflatable Companion that floated on its back in Seoul’s Seokchon Lake, titled Holiday, in 2018. “I was thinking of all the tension in the world, and I wanted to create work that would make people think about relaxing,” Kaws explained. “And there’s nothing more relaxing than lying on your back in water and looking up at the sky.” The following year, Kaws supersized Holiday even further, bringing a 120-foot, 40-ton version to the Hong Kong harbor in celebration of the art fair Art Basel Hong Kong. To commemorate the monumental installation, Kaws released a series of limited edition Holiday collectibles, including t-shirts, bath toys, and plush sculptures.
