Pure Evil (British, 1968), a.k.a. Charles Uzzell Edwards, grew up in South Wales and was by his own account, the only new romantic in the village.
Blue blood
Pure Evil is perhaps the most blue-blooded urban artist working today with a family tree which allegedly includes a number of saints and members of various European royal dynasties.
Early years
He spent his teenage years customising his own clothes and experimenting with eyeliner. This love of urban street style led him to do fashion degree in London where he earned a bit of a reputation as a troublemaker.
Skateboarding was another of his loves and after the Poll Tax Riots in Trafalgar Square, he decided to leave Thatcherite London for a two week trip to California, which ended up being a 10-year stay in San Francisco.
Bunny rabbits
He first discovered street art during a decade spent in California, where he designed for influential streetwear clothing company Anarchic Adjustment, and willingly subjected himself to the influence of West Coast Graffiti artists. Upon his return to London he started painting (his now trademark) weird fanged PURE EVIL bunny rabbits everywhere.
The dark side
Pure Evil has a keen interest in exploring the darker side of the wreckage of Utopian dreams and the myth of the Apocalypse, a belief in the life-changing event that brings history with all its conflicts to an end.
Exhibitions and more
Pure Evil has exhibited worldwide in China, Russia, Mongolia, Brazil, USA and all over Europe.
He also produces a monthly radio show and regularly gives workshops and participates in lectures about street art.
